Don’t underestimate the time you need

desert-island A tip for anyone commissioning an article that requires the writer to interview someone: don’t underestimate the amount of time it can take to arrange an interview!

The person to be interviewed may just be going off on holiday for two weeks, or be on a business trip to the Far East, unreachable for days on end, or in another time zone, severely limiting the windows of opportunity for synchronous interaction… And even when people are working normally, they may still be very busy, and interview for your magazine may not be top priority for them. Then, when the interview has been arranged, the article still has to be written and approved – a process that also requires time.

So, in short, make sure you leave enough time before the printing presses start to roll (or the web designer starts coding) for the job to be done properly!
